Storefront is one of those trades that looks simple from the sidewalk and turns into a coordination nightmare on the schedule. It's just aluminum and glass, right? Except that aluminum frame has to land on a slab edge someone poured months ago, tie into waterproofing another sub installed, hold a door with hardware that took ten weeks to arrive, and pass a water test before the drywall behind it can close. Get the sequence wrong and you're either tearing out finished work or explaining to the owner why the lobby still has plywood in the openings.
This is a trade where the schedule earns its keep. Not the big bar-chart CPM everyone ignores, but the near-term look-ahead where you actually catch the missing embed, the frame that hasn't shipped, and the glazing day that landed on a 20-degree morning. Here's how storefront installation really sequences, where it goes sideways, and what to watch in the two to four weeks before a crew ever shows up.
Why storefront breaks schedules more than window work does
People lump storefront in with windows because both are glass in a frame. They're not the same animal. A punched window drops into a rough opening and gets flashed — one trade, one interface, done. Storefront is a structural-ish assembly that spans from slab to slab or slab to soffit, carries entrance doors, ties into the building's water and air barrier, and often transitions into curtain wall above it. That means four or five trades have fingerprints on the same twelve inches of building.
The installation itself runs in distinct phases, and each one has its own prerequisites and its own way of failing:
- Sub-sill / opening prep — slab edge, embeds, blocking, and waterproofing tie-in complete and verified.
- Frame set — perimeter framing anchored, shimmed, plumb, and squared.
- Sealing and flashing — perimeter sealant, end dams, weeps, and the transition to the building's WRB.
- Glazing — glass and infill panels set, gaskets or wet-seal, snap beads.
- Doors and hardware — entrances hung, closers/operators set, hardware and access control terminated.
- Finish, testing, and protection — final sealant, water test, cleaning, and covering it back up so the next trade doesn't wreck it.
You can't compress those into one line item and expect the field to figure it out. Break them out on the weekly work plan so a foreman can see, by location, which phase each opening is in. When a phase is a phase on the schedule, the guy pulling the look-ahead notices when phase three is waiting on someone else's phase two.
The prep work that has to be right before frame ever ships
The most expensive storefront mistakes happen before the aluminum arrives. If the opening isn't ready, you either send a crew home or — worse — they force a frame into a bad opening and you inherit a leak nobody can find for two years.
Verify these in the field, not off the drawings, ideally two to three weeks out while there's still time to fix something:
- Slab edge and opening dimensions. Field-measure the actual openings. Storefront is fabricated to real dimensions, and a slab poured an inch proud of layout eats your perimeter joint. Get the fabricator field dimensions before they cut, not after.
- Embeds and anchors. If the design uses cast-in embeds or a continuous sub-sill anchor, those had to go in during the concrete or framing phase. Miss one and you're drilling structural anchors and hoping you clear rebar.
- Waterproofing / WRB tie-in. The air and water barrier has to be turned into the opening and ready to lap the storefront flashing. If the WRB sub already left, coordinate their return before frames go in — chasing them back after glazing is a change order and a delay.
- Sub-sill and slope. Confirm the sub-sill flashing, back dam, and pan slope-to-drain are detailed and buildable. Water gets in every storefront; the sub-sill is what gets it back out. This is the single most common source of callbacks.
Build a readiness check into the look-ahead for each opening. A frame set with an unverified opening is a task that's "ready" on paper and a fire drill in the field.
Frame set: get materials and openings to meet in the middle
Frame installation is where fabrication lead time collides with field readiness, and the look-ahead's whole job is to make those two things arrive together. Storefront frames are typically fabricated to order on a six-to-ten-week lead, sometimes longer for custom finishes or big packages. If you release fabrication late, the crew stands around. If it ships early and the openings aren't ready, you're storing long, expensive, easily-dinged aluminum on a jobsite with no room for it.
A rolling look-ahead is how you thread that. Keep an eye on the four-week horizon for material delivery against field progress: when the openings for Area B are two weeks from ready, that's your signal fabrication for Area B should already be releasing or in transit. During the set itself, watch the fundamentals: frames plumb and square, shims at anchor points (not floating on sealant), proper anchor engagement, and thermal isolation preserved where the detail calls for it. A frame that's out of plumb telegraphs into every piece of glass you try to set later.
Glazing: the phase weather actually controls
Glazing follows frame completion — and I mean completion, including perimeter sealant that needs to cure, not "the frame's basically up." Sending glaziers to a frame that isn't sealed and squared just means they set glass twice.
Weather runs this phase whether you like it or not. Structural silicone and wet-glazed sealants have temperature and substrate-moisture minimums; go below them and the cure is compromised in a way you won't see until it fails. Wind is a safety and handling issue — nobody's flying a 6-foot lite of insulated glass on a gusty day. Build weather slack into glazing tasks; don't schedule them tight against a hard finish milestone with no room to slip a day. A one-day weather buffer on glazing is cheap insurance against a resealed joint later.
Coordinate glazing with interior work too. Once glass is in and the openings are sealed, that elevation is weathertight and the interior trades behind it can run. That's leverage — prioritize glazing on the elevations where drywall, MEP rough, or flooring are waiting, and you unlock whole interior work paths. This is a spot where the look-ahead pays for itself: sequencing storefront by which interiors it releases, not just by installer convenience.
Doors, hardware, and the things with ten-week lead times
Entrance doors are where storefront quietly turns into a systems-integration job. A storefront entrance isn't just a door — it's the door, the closer or automatic operator, the hardware set, the electric strike or maglock, the card reader, and sometimes a panic device tied to fire alarm. Each of those can come from a different supplier on a different lead time, and they all have to land on the same door on roughly the same week.
The killers here are lead time and cross-trade coordination:
- Order hardware early. Specialty entrance hardware and auto operators routinely run eight to twelve weeks. If procurement doesn't start when the frames are ordered, the door frame is standing there for a month with no way to close. Track long-lead hardware as its own line on the look-ahead so it doesn't hide inside "install doors."
- Automatic operators need power and controls. An auto door is useless without the electrician's circuit and the low-voltage controls terminated. Sequence the EC and the door installer so power is available when the operator sets — not a callback after the fact.
- Access control and security wiring. Card readers, electric strikes, and door position switches mean the security/low-voltage sub has to pull wire before the frame closes up, then terminate after the door hangs. Miss the rough-in window and you're fishing wire through a finished mullion.
Put the electrician, the security sub, and the door installer on the same weekly work plan for those door openings. When three trades have to touch one door in the right order, the coordination has to be explicit — verbal "yeah we'll get to it" is how you end up commissioning a door that has no power.
Interfaces, transitions, and the joint nobody owns
The riskiest part of any storefront job is the joint between it and something else — the WRB, the adjacent wall assembly, and especially the transition to curtain wall above. These interfaces fail because they sit on the boundary between two subs' scopes, and boundaries are where balls get dropped.
When storefront meets curtain wall, and the two come from different fabricators, somebody has to own the transition detail and the sequence at the connection. Sort out on paper — before either sub mobilizes — who sets what first, how the systems lap, and who's responsible for the continuity of the air and water seal across the joint. Flashing and joint sealant at these interfaces frequently need coordinated work from two trades on the same day. Schedule those as joint activities on the weekly work plan, with both companies named, rather than as two separate tasks each sub assumes the other is handling.
Testing, punch, and protecting what you built
Many storefront and entrance systems require field water testing (AAMA 501.2 hose testing is common) and sometimes air-infiltration testing. The number-one cause of a failed water test isn't bad product — it's testing an incomplete installation. Sealant that hasn't cured, a weep that's plugged with debris, an end dam left out. Don't schedule the test until the install is genuinely done and cured. A failed test isn't just a re-test; it triggers investigation, remediation, and a schedule hit while everyone argues about the source.
Two more things the schedule should never skip:
- Punch list ownership. Storefront punch items blur across trades — is that leak the glazier's sealant, the WRB sub's lap, or the mason's flashing above? Sort ownership early and hold time in the crew's schedule for their return trip. Crews that demobilize without booked punch time are the ones you're begging to come back during closeout.
- Protection. Newly installed storefront gets scratched frames, cracked corners, and sealant-smeared glass from every trade that works near it. Sequence protection right after glazing and account for a cleaning and final-detail pass near turnover. Anodized and painted aluminum doesn't buff out.
Keep the closeout paper moving alongside the field work — shop drawings, glass and finish certifications, warranties, and O&M info. It's not glamorous, but a warranty claim two years out lives or dies on whether you documented that the install was done per the system manufacturer's details.
The through-line: manage storefront by opening, in the near term
