Paint is the trade everybody thinks is easy and nobody schedules right. It follows almost everything and it precedes almost everything, which means when paint slips, the whole finish stack behind it slips with it. I've watched a two-day paint delay turn into a two-week punch nightmare because the flooring installer walked into rooms that weren't dry, tracked primer across the slab, and then argued about whose fault the base was. Coordinating painters isn't about babysitting a crew with rollers. It's about protecting a hand-off chain that runs from drywall all the way to final clean.

Know what has to be done before the painter walks in
Paint is a finish. It shows every sin underneath it, so the prerequisite list is longer than most people plan for. Before you release an area to paint, the honest checklist is:
- Drywall hung, taped, and sanded — and the sanding dust vacuumed, not just knocked down.
- All penetrations cut in and trimmed: sprinkler heads, device boxes, HVAC boots, access panels.

A whole floor painted in the wrong sheen costs a week and a fight over who pays.
Touch-up: plan it, don't hope for it
Touch-up is where paint jobs go to die. If you don't schedule it as a distinct pass near the end, the painter demobilizes, and now every punch item means a truck roll for one wall. Hold the final touch-up until the room is genuinely done being abused — after flooring, after casework, after the mechanical and electrical trims. The coordination problem stops being "when does paint happen" and becomes "which crew is in which area, and who else needs that same space."
Access is the quiet killer. Painting needs the room clear — no material staged, no scaffold from another trade parked in the way, no lift blocking the wall. Specialty finishes deserve their own note. Epoxy floors, intumescent coatings, decorative or Level 5 finishes — these need skilled hands, longer cure windows, and sometimes their own environmental controls. Don't bury them inside the general paint bar. Schedule the specialty finisher as a separate activity with its own lead time, because the guy who does automotive-grade epoxy is not the guy rolling corridors, and his window won't flex to fit yours.
Hold quality with a standard, not a vibe
"Looks good" is not a spec. Set the quality bar with the mock-up and the manufacturer's requirements — mil thickness, number of coats, coverage — and inspect against it. The two-coat-that's-really-one-heavy-coat trick is common and it always shows up later as burn-through and uneven sheen.
