Steel is the one trade where the schedule is mostly locked before anybody swings a bolt. By the time the first column lands, the fabricator has been buying material, cutting, and detailing for two or three months, and the erection sequence you drew on paper is now a physical reality of trucks, cranes, and connections that either fit or don't. A six-week look-ahead is where all of that pre-planning either comes together or falls apart in slow motion. Used right, it's the tool that keeps your ironworkers, your crane, your deck crew, and your fireproofers from stepping on each other. Used wrong, it's a list of dates nobody believes.
Here's how the good steel supers actually use a rolling six-week window, and where the usual mistakes hide.
Why Steel Wants a Longer Look-Ahead Than Most Trades
Most trades live comfortably in a two- or three-week window because their material is a phone call and a two-day delivery away. Steel doesn't work like that. The long pole is fabrication lead time, and it starts well upstream of the field. Shop drawings have to be detailed, submitted, reviewed, and approved before a single piece gets cut. On a mid-size commercial frame you're routinely looking at six to ten weeks from released-for-fabrication to steel on the truck, and connection material and specialty items like embed plates or moment connections can stretch that further.
That's why six weeks is the sweet spot. Three weeks is too short to react to a fabrication slip. You'd find out the sequence you need for erection isn't coming until it's already too late to reshuffle. Six weeks gives you enough runway to see a shop delay, call the detailer, and re-sequence around the pieces that are actually ready. The window is long enough to be useful and short enough that the dates still mean something.
Sequence the shop by erection need, not by piece mark
The single most valuable thing a look-ahead does for steel is force the conversation about sequence with your fabricator early and often. Shops love to fabricate in the order that's efficient for the shop — batch all the beams of one size, run all the columns together. That's fine until it collides with how you have to erect. You erect by area and by lift, bottom up, and you need the columns for Sequence 1 before the beams for Sequence 3.
Put the erection sequence numbers on your look-ahead and share it with the shop. When the fabricator can see that your crane is set up in the northeast corner for the first two weeks, they can prioritize those piece marks. Delivery Windows Are Where Field Reality Bites
Fabrication can be perfect and you can still lose a day at the gate. Steel deliveries are heavy, oversized, and time-sensitive, and most jobsites can only stage a limited amount at once. Your six-week look-ahead needs to carry delivery as its own line, not buried inside "erection."
- Match deliveries to shakeout space, not to the calendar. If you can only lay down two truckloads of steel at a time, don't schedule five to arrive Monday. Sequence deliveries to land a day or two ahead of when the crane needs the pieces.
- Confirm the actual truck, not the promise. A delivery date in the schedule is a plan. Two weeks out, it should firm up to a confirmed dispatch. One of the jobs of the weekly work plan pulled from your look-ahead is to convert "planned" into "confirmed with a bill of lading."
- Plan the offload path. Where does the truck park, where does the crane pick from, who's the signal person, and does that route conflict with concrete trucks or the excavator that morning? Deliveries fail on access far more than on fabrication.
A load that shows up before you have room for it is almost as bad as one that shows up late. Both cost you rehandling, and rehandling steel is how people get hurt and how pieces get bent.
Erection Sequencing and the Crane You're Paying For by the Hour
Erection is the visible part, but the discipline is invisible: it's the sequence. You raise steel bottom-up, area by area, and you can't get ahead of yourself because the structure has to be stable and bolted-up before you move on. Your look-ahead should show erection in the same sequence blocks the shop and the delivery are keyed to.
The crane is the pacing resource and usually the most expensive thing on the site by the day. If it's a rental with an operator, every idle hour is money burning. If it's a mobile crane on a tight rental window, a two-day slip in fabrication can mean the crane sits or leaves and comes back at a mobilization cost. This is why crane time belongs on the six-week look-ahead as its own tracked resource, coordinated against the pieces that are actually confirmed for delivery. The question you're always answering is: for every day the crane is on site, is there enough ready steel in the right sequence to keep it hooking?
Bolt-up and connections trail the raising crew
Raising steel and completing connections are two different operations with two different crews, and the gap between them matters. The raising gang sets and plumbs and drops in enough bolts to make it stable. The bolt-up crew comes behind to complete and torque or tension every connection. Don't let that gap get too long — decking and everything after it depends on connections being complete, not just tacked.
Moment connections, field welds, and specialty details eat time that simple shear-tab bolted connections don't. If your frame has a lot of moment frames or heavy field welding, build that into the durations. A look-ahead that assumes every connection takes the same time will always run optimistic on the moment-frame areas, and that's exactly where you'll fall behind.
Deck, Studs, and Handing Off to the Follow-On Trades
Metal deck follows the structure, and it's the handoff point where steel stops being an island and starts driving the rest of the building. You can't lay deck over an area until the connections in that area are buttoned up, and you often can't shoot studs or pour until the deck is placed and welded or fastened down. So the sequence chain is real and unforgiving: erect, bolt-up complete, deck, stud, then the slab or roofing crew is waiting on you.
Where a look-ahead earns its keep here is showing those trade flows explicitly. When your deck crew can see they'll have Sequence 2 available on Thursday, they stage for it. When the concrete sub can see the composite deck won't be ready in the west bay until the following week, they don't show up and stand around. This is short-interval scheduling doing its actual job — connecting one trade's finish to the next trade's start so the handoffs are planned instead of discovered.
Fireproofing: The Coordination Nobody Plans Early Enough
Spray-applied fireproofing is the classic steel trade that gets squeezed. It follows erection and bolt-up, it's messy, and it fights with everybody. Overspray gets on everything, so you want it done before MEP rough-in crowds the overhead — but you also can't fireproof steel that still has connections to complete or deck to weld off. The window is narrow and it's easy to miss.
On the six-week look-ahead, fireproofing should be sequenced right behind bolt-up and deck welding, area by area, and it should be visibly coordinated with when the overhead MEP trades want to start. Get the fireproofer in and out of an area cleanly before the ductwork and conduit fill the ceiling. Miss that window and you're either patching fireproofing that got knocked off during MEP, or you're holding up rough-in while the fireproofer works around installed systems. Both are avoidable, and both show up as a scheduling failure, not a fireproofing failure.
Shop Drawings and Submittals: The Constraint That Lives Upstream
Here's the hard truth about steel scheduling: most steel delays are actually submittal delays wearing a disguise. If the shop drawings aren't approved, the shop can't fabricate, and no amount of crane coordination fixes that. Your look-ahead has to reach back and track the constraint chain — which submittals are outstanding, which RFIs are holding up detailing, and when each package needs to be released to protect the erection date six weeks out.
Run the math backward from erection. If you need Sequence 3 steel in the field on a given week, and fabrication is six weeks, and the shop needs drawings approved two weeks before they start cutting, then your approved-shop-drawing date is eight weeks ahead of erection. Flag that on the look-ahead as a constraint with a real date. When you can see a submittal is late against that date, you have time to escalate. When you can't see it, you find out when the truck doesn't show.
Weather and the Contingency You Build In, Not Around
Steel erection is exposed work at height, and it's genuinely weather-sensitive in ways other trades aren't. High wind shuts down the crane and stops connection work up top — you don't fly loads or send ironworkers out on beams in a stiff wind. Ice and rain make everything slower and more dangerous. Cold affects field welding and bolt tensioning.
You can't schedule weather away, but you can carry contingency honestly. Build a realistic buffer into the erection duration for the season — more in winter, more in a windy or coastal location — instead of scheduling a perfect run of days and then re-baselining every time the wind comes up. A rolling look-ahead that gets adjusted weekly absorbs weather far better than a static bar chart, because you're always re-planning the next six weeks against what actually happened last week.
The Habit That Makes It All Work
None of this is exotic. It's the same discipline every week: pull the next six weeks forward, check what's confirmed against what's planned, and have the honest conversation about constraints before they become delays. Steel rewards that discipline more than almost any trade because its lead times are long and its handoffs are unforgiving — a small slip at the shop ripples all the way to the concrete pour.
The value of doing it in a real look-ahead tool rather than a spreadsheet is that everyone — your ironworkers, the fabricator, the crane operator, the deck and fireproofing subs, and the trades waiting downstream — is looking at the same sequence tied to the same areas and the same dates.
