Glazing Contractor Scheduling with Crew Scheduling Software Construction

Glazing is one of those trades that looks simple from the sidewalk and turns into a knife fight the closer you get to the schedule. It's not just "hang some windows." Between storefront, punched openings, curtain wall, and interior glass, a glazing contractor is really running three or four different operations with different crews, different lead times, and different predecessors. Miss the coordination on any one of them and you're either sitting on a crane you're paying for by the day, or you've buttoned up a wall that failed the water test and now you're opening it back up.

This is a short-interval scheduling problem more than a bar-chart problem. The master schedule tells you glazing runs eight weeks; it does not tell you that the north elevation openings are out of tolerance, that half your framing shipment is stuck at the port, or that the mason is still two floors above where your lift needs to sit. That detail lives in the look-ahead, and if you're a glazing foreman or the super riding the enclosure, the look-ahead is where you win or lose the sequence.

Openings First: Verify, Don't Assume

The single most common way glazing goes sideways is showing up to glaze an opening that isn't ready. Ready doesn't mean "the hole exists." It means the rough opening is the right size, plumb, square, and in tolerance for your anchors; the sill flashing and pan is installed and inspected; the substrate is done getting hit by other trades; and someone has actually checked the dimensions against your approved shop drawings.

Field-verify openings a week to ten days before your crew is scheduled to install in that area. Send someone with a tape and a level to physically check a representative sample, not just the pretty corner. Openings drift. Framers work to a line that moves, concrete gets poured a half-inch proud, and a curtain wall system that needs plus-or-minus a quarter inch does not forgive a rough opening that's three-eighths out over ten feet. Catch it in the look-ahead window and you've got time to have the framer fix it. Catch it the morning your crew arrives and you've just burned a day of labor and a slot on the calendar.

Build the opening-readiness check into your weekly work plan as its own line item with a real owner and a real date, sitting a few days ahead of the install. When you're planning trade flows, the predecessor to "install glazing, north wall" is never "frame north wall" — it's "verify and accept north wall openings." Those are two different activities and the gap between them is your safety margin.

Material Lead Time Is the Whole Ballgame

You cannot install glass you don't have, and glass is a long-lead item that does not care about your urgency. Insulated glass units, custom-fabricated storefront and curtain wall framing, and anything with a specialty coating or a non-standard size can run anywhere from several weeks to a few months from release to delivery, and that clock only starts after submittals are approved. The most expensive scheduling mistake in glazing happens months before the crew ever shows up: a submittal that sat on someone's desk, or a fabrication release that nobody pulled the trigger on.

Run your material tracking on a longer horizon than your crew scheduling. Your crews you're planning three to six weeks out. Your glass and framing releases you're tracking on a six-week-plus look-ahead, and the submittal and fabrication milestones live even further back on the master. When you sit down for the weekly plan, the questions are blunt:

  • What's actually on site right now, and does it match what we're installing this week?
  • What's confirmed shipped, with a delivery date you'd bet on — not a "should be soon"?
  • What's still in fabrication, and is the release date old enough that it threatens a week we've already committed crews to?
  • Do we have staging and secure, dry storage for the material that's arriving, or is it going to sit in the weather on a muddy pad?

Don't sequence a crew into an area on the strength of glass that's "in transit." Sequence them on glass that's racked on site or has a delivery you can defend. A rolling look-ahead makes the gap between "promised" and "here" impossible to hide, which is exactly what you want.

Crew Specialization Is Real — Match It

Storefront glaziers and curtain wall glaziers are not always interchangeable, and your best stick-system crew may be mediocre at unitized panels. Structural silicone glazing, in particular, is a skill and often a certification, not something you hand to whoever's free that morning. When you build the weekly plan, assign by capability, not just by headcount. Putting your sharpest curtain wall crew on punched windows because that's where the open slot was is how you end up with your weakest hands on the hardest system.

The flip side is real too: keep a crew on the same system and the same elevation long enough to get up the learning curve. Glazing has a rhythm — the first day on a new detail is slow, the third is fast. Bouncing crews around the building every two days for "coverage" throws away that ramp every single time. A stable trade flow, where a crew follows a logical path through the building instead of teleporting, is worth more than it looks on paper.

Lifts, Swing Stages, and the Choreography Above Grade

Anything you can't reach from a ladder turns glazing into an equipment-coordination problem. Boom lifts, scissor lifts, mast climbers, swing stages — every one of them has to be reserved, positioned, and un-conflicted with whatever else needs that same footprint. The classic failure is two trades needing the same lift or the same ground position in the same week, discovered on Monday morning instead of in the plan.

Coordinate lift and access needs at least a couple weeks out, and put them on the look-ahead as explicit resources, not afterthoughts. If the mast climber your curtain wall crew rides is shared with the caulking crew and the metal-panel sub, that sharing is a schedule constraint you plan around, not a surprise. And remember your predecessor trades in the vertical: you can't fly panels on an elevation where the mason or the metal-panel crew is still working above you. Enclosure moves up a building in a sequence, and glazing has to slot into it, not fight it.

Weather, Sealants, and the Cure You Can't Rush

Wet glazing lives and dies by temperature and moisture. Structural and weatherproofing sealants have application windows — minimum surface temps, dew-point limits, dry substrate requirements — and if you apply outside them, the manufacturer's warranty is the least of your worries; the joint just won't perform. Curing takes real time. Structural silicone in particular needs days, not hours, before those units can take load or before you're leaning on the seal, and cold weather stretches that further.

So sealing and caulking aren't a footnote to the install — they're their own activity on the plan, with their own weather sensitivity and their own duration for cure. Don't schedule the joints to be tested or loaded the day after they're tooled. Build in the cure time honestly. When a cold snap or a wet stretch is in the forecast, a rolling look-ahead lets you pull the wet work forward or slide it back and swap in dry-glazed or interior scope, instead of losing the crew for the day. Dry-glazed systems ride out weather better, which is worth knowing when you're deciding what to attack on a marginal day.

Sequencing the Enclosure — and Protecting What You Install

Curtain wall is the part that scares supers, and rightly. Whether it's stick-built or unitized, it goes together in a specific order — anchors, then mullions or panels, then infill and glass, then perimeter seals — and each step gates the next. Get the anchor layout wrong at the bottom and the error compounds all the way up. Unitized systems trade field labor for a punishing dependency on delivery sequence: the panels have to arrive in the order they install, because you can't easily set panel 40 before panel 39. That means your delivery schedule and your install sequence are the same conversation, and both belong on the look-ahead.

There's also a real interaction between glazing and building dry-in. The whole point of enclosure is to get the building watertight so interior trades can run. That makes glazing a bottleneck the whole job is watching — which is exactly why the sequence has to be clean and why slipping a week here ripples into drywall, MEP rough, and finishes downstream. Interior glass, by contrast, is a follower: storefront-style interior partitions, glass railings, and mirrors come after the finishes are far enough along that you're not sending your glass back out for damage, and after the floors and walls that receive them are done moving.

Which brings up the last thing that costs glazing contractors money quietly: protection. Installed glass is a target. It gets scratched by adjacent trades, splattered with overspray and slurry, hit by scaffold and material carts, and etched by runoff off fresh concrete and masonry. Plan protection as part of the install — film, boards, barricades, corner guards on storefront — and put it on the plan as an activity with an owner, because "everybody's responsible" means nobody is. A pane you have to replace at closeout because it got sandblasted by grinding dust is pure loss, and it usually shows up on the punch list when you have no schedule left to absorb it.

Pulling It Together in the Weekly Plan

None of this is exotic. It's the same discipline every enclosure super already knows they need: verify the predecessor, protect the lead time, match the crew to the work, respect the cure, plan the access, guard what you built. What kills glazing schedules isn't that the concepts are hard — it's that they live in six different people's heads and never get reconciled in one place before the week starts.
