Every superintendent has a version of the same story. You've got a slab pour scheduled for Thursday. Trucks are ordered, the pump is booked, the finishers are lined up, and the weather guy on the ten o'clock news said "chance of showers." Wednesday afternoon the sky opens up, the subgrade turns to soup, and now you're eating a short-load charge on the concrete, a trip charge on the pump, and a day of standby for a finishing crew that showed up to stand around and watch it rain. Nobody got hurt, nothing collapsed, and you still lost a day and a couple thousand dollars because the weather beat you to the punch by about eighteen hours.
Weather is the one variable on your job you have zero control over and near-total responsibility for. You can't stop the rain, but you can absolutely be the reason the crew got sent home smart instead of getting caught flat-footed. The difference is almost always how far ahead you saw it coming and what you did with those hours. That's really the whole game with weather and scheduling: converting a forecast into a decision early enough that the decision still has options attached to it.
Why a static schedule always loses to weather
A schedule printed Monday morning is a snapshot of what you believed on Monday morning. Weather doesn't care what you believed Monday. By Wednesday the forecast has shifted twice, and if your plan lives on a wall in a paper form, it doesn't shift with it. The superintendents who handle weather well aren't the ones with better forecasts — everybody's pulling from the same NWS data. They're the ones whose plan is a living thing that they re-touch every day.
This is exactly why short-interval scheduling and the weekly work plan exist. A three-week look-ahead isn't a promise; it's a rolling bet you re-place every few days as conditions firm up. When your look-ahead sits in software that can pull a site-specific forecast and lay it right on top of the activities you've planned, you stop mentally cross-referencing a weather app against a schedule in your head. Know your weather-sensitive work cold
Not all activities care about weather, and the ones that do care about different things. The mistake is treating "weather delay" as one bucket. Rain is a different enemy than cold, which is different from wind, which is different from humidity. Before you can plan around weather you need to know, activity by activity, exactly what breaks it. A working list every super should have in their head:
- Concrete flatwork and pours. Rain during placement or before initial set ruins the finish and can compromise the top surface. Cold is the sneakier problem — below about 40°F hydration slows to a crawl, and freezing before the concrete hits roughly 500 psi can wreck it permanently. Hot, dry, windy days cause plastic shrinkage cracking because the surface flashes off faster than bleed water can rise. One material, three totally different failure modes.
- Roofing and membrane work. Most adhesives and self-adhered products have minimum application temperatures, often around 40–50°F, and torch or hot-mop work has its own rules. Wet decks and roofing don't mix, and you never want a crew on a slick, sloped roof in wind.
- Painting and coatings. Read the data sheet, not the sky. Most architectural coatings want the surface at least 5°F above the dew point and air temp in a specific band. Paint applied outside that window looks fine going on and fails six months later — a warranty callback with your name on it.
- Masonry. Cold-weather masonry has real code requirements (heated materials, protection) once temps drop, and rain can wash out fresh joints.
- Earthwork and grading. You cannot compact mud. Rain on open dirt can cost you days of drying before you can proof-roll again, and it's often the single longest weather tail on the whole job.
- Crane picks and anything at height. This one's a safety line, not a quality line. Know your equipment's wind ratings and your own. When sustained wind or gusts climb, the pick is off — that's not negotiable.
When your scheduling tool lets you flag activities by their weather sensitivity, a forecast stops being generic. A 60% chance of rain means nothing to drywall hangers working inside a dried-in building; it means everything to the flatwork crew. Flagging the sensitivity is what lets the tool tell you which of tomorrow's activities are actually at risk instead of making you re-derive it every morning.
Turn the forecast into a decision, not an anxiety
Watching the radar all week isn't a plan. A plan is a set of pre-decided actions tied to thresholds. The best supers I've worked with essentially run a personal go/no-go protocol, and it usually keys off a couple of specific numbers, decided in advance so you're not making the call emotionally at 5 a.m. with trucks already rolling.
For a pour, that might be: if the probability of measurable rain in the placement window is above 50% at the 24-hour mark, we make the call to reschedule the afternoon before, not the morning of. The reason for the buffer is money and logistics — canceling ready-mix and a pump the day before is a phone call; canceling at 6 a.m. is a short-load charge and a pump trip fee. The same logic applies to cold: if the overnight low threatens to drop the concrete below freezing before it's gained strength, you're either not pouring or you're committing to blankets and admixtures, and that decision needs to happen while the supply house is still open.
Push alerts matter here, but only if they're aimed. An app that buzzes your phone every time it might sprinkle trains you to ignore it — the boy-who-cried-rain problem. What you want is an alert that fires when weather crosses a threshold on an activity you flagged as sensitive. "Rain probability just jumped to 70% over Thursday's slab pour" is a message you'll read every time. Generic weather noise you'll swipe away and eventually miss the one that mattered.
Always have the rain-day work ready
The superintendents who lose the least to weather aren't the ones who get rained on the least. They're the ones who always have a bad-weather bench ready to send in. The goal is never to lose a whole crew-day — you lose the outdoor work and pivot the crew to something productive under roof.
This is where a good weekly work plan earns its keep. When you build the week, build the weather alternative into it at the same time. For every weather-dependent activity you plan, know the indoor or protected task that same crew can slide to. Slab pour rains out? The concrete crew is stripping forms, prepping the next pour's edge form and rebar, or chasing punch. Exterior sheathing washed out? The framers move to interior blocking, backing, or firestopping. The move only works if the backup work is already ready — materials on site, area released, nobody in front of them. Deciding on the rain-day work at 6:30 a.m. in the rain is how you end up with a crew "cleaning up" for eight hours, which is a polite way of describing paid standby.
Keeping both the primary and the backup visible in the same look-ahead is what makes this real. If the backup work is off in someone's head or on a separate list, it doesn't happen. If it's sitting right there in the plan as the flagged alternative, the pivot takes one conversation at the morning huddle.
Chase the weather windows, don't just dodge the weather
Weather planning cuts both ways. Dodging the bad days is defense. Offense is recognizing the good windows and reordering your work to grab them. If you've got a run of exterior work — waterproofing, paint, roofing, exterior stucco — and the forecast shows a clean four-day stretch a week out with rain on both ends, that dry window is gold. This is the part most crews leave on the table. They react to bad weather but never proactively exploit good weather. Document the weather like it's evidence — because it is

Log the actual weather every single day: temperature range, precipitation, wind, and — this is the one people skip — what it actually did to the work. "Rain 1.2 in., site closed for earthwork, could not compact pad B" is worth a hundred times more than "rain" scribbled in a corner.
That daily record is the backbone of any weather-delay claim. Contracts typically give you relief for unusually severe weather, not for normal seasonal rain — which means you have to show both that the weather was abnormal and that it actually impacted a controlling activity on the critical path. You can't reconstruct that six months later from memory. Communicate the call once, to everybody
A weather decision made at 6 a.m. that only lives in your head is worthless to the three subs who are already loading trucks. The failure mode is a game of telephone — you call your foreman, he calls a couple guys, and the drywall sub who was coming to do a small scope never gets the word and shows up to a dark, muddy site expecting to work. Now you owe a conversation about a trip charge.
When the call changes, it has to reach everyone affected in one move, not through a chain of individual phone calls that drop people.
