Most construction training video fails for the same reason most construction training fails: it teaches the buttons, not the thinking. A new superintendent can watch a crisp ten-minute screen recording of somebody dragging bars around a schedule and still have no idea how to build a weekly work plan that survives contact with a real jobsite. If you're the person tasked with making these videos, your job isn't to narrate a software tour. It's to transfer the judgment that a good planner uses when they sit down Thursday afternoon and figure out what fifteen crews are actually going to do next week.

Here's how to make videos that do that.

Decide what you're actually teaching before you hit record

There are three completely different skills bundled inside "building a weekly work plan," and if you blur them together your videos turn to mush. Separate them up front:

  • The concept — why a short-interval plan exists, how the weekly plan pulls from the three- to six-week look-ahead, what a commitment is, why you only plan work that's actually ready.
  • The craft — how an experienced planner reads a job, sequences trades, sizes durations, and finds the constraints before they bite.
  • The tool — where the buttons are in whatever software you use to write and share the plan.

The tool is the easy part and the least important. A foreman who understands the craft can build a decent plan on a whiteboard. A foreman who's memorized every menu in the software but can't see that the drywall crew has nowhere to go on Wednesday will produce a beautiful, useless schedule. Weight your video library accordingly: most of your runtime should be craft and concept, with the software shown as the natural place that thinking gets written down.

Practically, that means one library shouldn't try to be everything. Make a short "why we plan this way" set for onboarding, a meatier "how to actually sequence and size the work" set for foremen and supers, and a lean "here's where things live in the app" reference set people can dip into when they forget how to publish or how to mark an activity complete.

Teach the look-ahead-to-weekly handoff, because that's where people get lost

The single most valuable thing you can put on video is the mental move from a rolling look-ahead to a committed weekly work plan. New planners either treat them as the same document or ignore the connection entirely. Both are wrong.

Show it as a funnel on a real job. The look-ahead — call it six weeks out — is where you're screening work for constraints: is the material released, is the design question answered, did the inspector sign off on the prior phase, is the predecessor trade actually going to be done. Walk through a specific activity and make the constraints concrete. "Frame the third-floor demising walls" isn't ready if the sprinkler rough hasn't dropped or the RFI on the shaft wall detail is still open. Say that on camera. Point at it.

Then show the weekly plan as the place where only ready work lands. The rule of thumb worth drilling into every viewer: you don't put anything on the weekly plan that still has an open constraint. If it's not ready, it stays in the look-ahead as something you're chasing, not something you're committing a crew to. A three-minute video that makes that one distinction land will save a viewer from months of blown commitments.

Use real sequences with real durations and real buffers

Generic examples are what killed the training you're replacing. "Demonstrate assigning a crew" teaches nothing. "Sequence the interior build-out on a wood-frame apartment stack" teaches something, because now you have to make real decisions on camera.

So make them. Narrate a genuine trade flow and don't hide the messy parts:

  • Rough-in follows framing, but leave a buffer — usually a day or two per area for framing cleanup, corrections, and the framing inspection before the trades stack in. Show why: if you overlap them zero-buffer, the plumber is drilling through studs the framer hasn't finished and you'll be re-nailing plates on Friday.
  • MEP rough-in isn't one activity, it's a mini-sequence with its own pecking order. Overhead first, then walls; typically plumbing and HVAC get their space before electrical threads through what's left. Say the quiet part out loud on video — the trade that roughs in last inherits everybody else's leftover space, so sequence it that way on purpose.
  • You don't close a wall until it's inspected. Put the inspection hold on the plan as its own line so nobody frames drywall over an unsigned rough. New supers forget the inspection is a schedule activity with a lead time, not a formality that happens instantly.
  • Insulation, then drywall hang, then tape and finish — and the finish sequence has dry times baked in that no amount of crew pressure changes. Teach viewers to schedule the mud, not just the labor.

The lesson underneath all of this, and worth stating directly in a video: durations on a plan are commitments, and a plan with no buffers is a plan that fails the first time a crew is a half-day late — which is every week. Teach people to protect the sequence with small, deliberate buffers at the handoffs between trades, not to squeeze them out to make the schedule look aggressive.

Show a plan getting wrecked, then recovered

Polished demos where everything goes right are forgettable and, worse, dishonest. The most watched, most rewatched training you can produce is a realistic failure and the recovery.

Set it up: Monday the plan looks great. Tuesday the concrete slab pour slips because the rebar inspection failed. Now walk through what a competent super actually does — which downstream activities just lost their footing, which crews need to be pulled forward onto other ready work so nobody stands around, what has to shove into next week, and how you communicate all of that before the affected subs show up Wednesday to nothing.

That scenario teaches the thing no button tour ever will: a weekly work plan is a living document you re-cut mid-week, not a stone tablet you publish Monday and defend for five days. Make a couple of these — a slipped inspection, a no-show sub, a material delivery that lands late — and you'll have covered ninety percent of what genuinely goes wrong on site.

Keep videos short by scoping them tight, not by rushing

Short videos aren't better because they're short; they're better because a tightly scoped topic is easier to absorb and easier to find again later. A single, clear idea per video beats a comprehensive one that tries to cover an entire workflow.

Good scoping looks like: "How to screen an activity for constraints" as its own video. "How to size a duration when you've never run this trade before" as another. "How to publish and share the plan with subs" as another. Each one answers one question a real person types into a search bar at 6 a.m. When someone's stuck, they don't want your forty-minute master class — they want the ninety seconds that unblocks them. Build the library so they can get exactly that.

If a topic genuinely needs fifteen minutes, give it fifteen minutes. Don't amputate a real sequence to hit an arbitrary length. Just don't pad, and don't chain three unrelated ideas together because it was convenient to record them in one sitting.

Record the screen like someone who's done the work

Once you're demonstrating the software itself — say, building the plan in LookAheadWall or whatever your crew runs — a few production habits separate useful from painful:

  • Slow your cursor down. The thing that's obvious to you because you built it is invisible to a first-timer. Move deliberately, pause on the click, let the screen catch up.
  • Zoom the region you're working in. Nobody can follow a full-screen schedule at native resolution on a phone. If your crew leaders are watching on the mobile app in a truck, assume a small screen and record for it.
  • Narrate the why alongside the what. "I'm dragging this activity to Wednesday" is worthless. "I'm moving it to Wednesday because Tuesday's the inspection and I won't commit the crew until it passes" is the whole point.
  • Use real project data, sanitized if you must, never lorem-ipsum activities. "Activity 1, Activity 2" reads as fake and viewers disengage. "Level 3 corridor drywall" reads as real and they lean in.

Make people prove they got it

Passive watching produces the illusion of competence. Build in a way to check. It doesn't need a fancy platform — after the constraint-screening video, drop a short prompt: "Here's an activity and its status. Is it ready for next week's plan? Why or why not?" After the sequencing video: "Here are four trades. Put them in order and tell me where the buffer goes."

These questions do double duty. They force the viewer to apply the judgment instead of just recognizing it, and they surface the people who nodded along without absorbing anything — usually the same people who'll blow a commitment two weeks later. A ten-second gut check beats a certificate of completion every time.

Caption everything and organize for retrieval

Two unglamorous things that quietly determine whether your library gets used. First, caption the videos. Half your audience is watching on a loud jobsite or in a truck with the sound off, and captions also let people skim for the part they need. Second, organize for how people search, not how you recorded. Group by the question being answered — "constraint screening," "sequencing trades," "handling a slip," "publishing to subs" — and put the concept videos in a clear onboarding path so a brand-new hire knows where to start.

A library nobody can navigate is a library nobody watches. If a foreman can't find the ninety-second answer in under a minute, they'll go ask the super instead, and you've saved no one any time.

The point of the whole exercise

Good training videos on weekly work planning aren't about making people fast at software. They're about compressing the years it normally takes to learn how to read a job, spot the constraint before it bites, sequence trades so they don't step on each other, and re-cut the plan when Tuesday goes sideways. The software — a clean, shareable look-ahead tool the whole crew can see — is just where that judgment gets written down and pushed out to the field.

Teach the judgment. Show the real sequences, the real buffers, the real failures and recoveries. Keep each video tight enough to find again. Do that, and you'll turn out planners who build weekly work plans that actually hold — which was the only thing you were ever trying to accomplish.
