IoT and sensors: mostly not your problem yet

You'll hear a lot about sensors feeding the schedule — concrete maturity meters, equipment telematics, material tags that update the plan when a delivery hits the gate. Some of this is real and good: concrete maturity sensors that tell you when a slab has hit strength so you can strip forms or load it a day earlier are money in the bank, and they tie directly into your look-ahead.

Most of the rest is a solution shopping for a problem. Your schedule doesn't slip because you didn't know a forklift's location. It slips because a submittal sat on someone's desk for three weeks. Chase the constraint that actually bites you.   • Adopt for the pain you have, not the pain a vendor names. If your problem is that foremen never see the current plan, mobile fixes it today — that's a buy. If your problem is submittal lag, no amount of IoT helps; that's a process fix.

The future of look-ahead scheduling software is less dramatic and more useful than the pitches suggest. It's not a robot superintendent. It's a plan that lives in everyone's pocket, updates when reality changes, quietly flags the conflicts you'd catch on a good day, and keeps an honest ledger of who promised what.
