Every schedule delay I have ever chased back to its source landed in one of three buckets: the crew wasn't there, the equipment wasn't there, or the material wasn't there. That's it. Logic ties, weather, inspections, and RFIs all matter, but the day-to-day fires on a jobsite are almost always a resource that showed up late, showed up short, or showed up and then sat idle because the work in front of it wasn't ready. Resource planning is nothing more than making sure the three things a crew needs to work are staged and ready before the crew arrives. Do that consistently and half your firefighting disappears.

Labor: plan the crew to the work, not the calendar
The most common labor mistake I see is scheduling by headcount instead of by task. "I've got a six-man framing crew" is not a plan. The plan is: which walls, which sequence, how many man-days each takes, and what has to be complete before they can start. When you break the week down that way, you usually find your six-man crew is really a four-man need on Monday and a nine-man need Thursday — and now you know to shuffle people or pull a temp rather than discovering it at 6:45 a.m.
A few labor rules of thumb worth internalizing:
- Confirm crews a week out, lock them three days out. Foremen need lead time to move bodies. If your Monday crew count changes Friday afternoon, that's manageable. If it changes Sunday night, someone's driving to the wrong job.
- Watch the ramp, not just the peak. A trade that jumps from two guys to twelve overnight almost never actually staffs to twelve on day one. Level the buildup across a few days and your productivity numbers survive.

Subs are resources too — and mostly out of your direct control
On most commercial and multi-family jobs, the majority of the labor on site works for someone else. That means your resource plan is only as good as your subs' resource plans, and you can't level a crew you don't employ.
