Most trade conflicts on a jobsite aren't really about two crews hating each other. They're about two crews wanting the same twelve feet of hallway on the same Tuesday, and nobody figured that out until both foremen showed up with their trucks. The drywall crew is stocking rock, the electricians are trying to pull wire out of those same walls, and now you've got a superintendent standing in the middle playing referee instead of running the job. Nobody's the villain. The plan just never told them they were on a collision course.
Software doesn't magically make subs get along. What good coordination tools actually do is surface the collision two weeks early, when it's a two-minute conversation instead of a two-hour standoff with idle labor on the clock. That's the whole game. Let me walk through where conflicts actually come from and what a coordination system can and can't do about each one.
Where trade conflicts actually start
After enough years you learn that almost every field fight traces back to one of four root causes, and they don't get equal airtime.
- Space. Two or more trades needing the same physical area at the same time. This is the number one killer on interior fit-out and multi-family, and it's the one a schedule that ignores location will never catch.
- Sequence. Work done out of order — insulation before the rough-in inspection signs off, flooring before the overhead work is done and something gets dropped on it, paint before the ceiling grid so now it's touch-up city.
- Resources. One tower crane, one hoist, one shared lift, one loading dock, and four trades who all "need it first thing Monday."
- Information. The mechanical sub building off Rev 3 while the framer is building off Rev 4. This one's quiet until a wall is in the wrong place.
Notice that only the last of those is really a "document control" problem. The first three are scheduling and planning problems, which is why a subcontractor management approach that's only about storing PDFs and sending messages misses most of the damage. The conflicts live in when and where, not just in the paperwork.
Prevention beats resolution, and it's not close
Here's the number that should drive everything: a space conflict caught in look-ahead planning costs you a sentence in a Thursday coordination meeting. The same conflict caught in the field costs you a half-day crew of standing labor, a bruised relationship, and usually a schedule slip that ripples three trades downstream. The cheap fix and the expensive fix are the exact same fix — the only difference is when you saw it.
That's what a look-ahead schedule buys you. When you're planning three to six weeks out at the location and activity level — not just "drywall, week of the 14th," but "drywall hang, Level 3 north wing, Tuesday–Wednesday" — the overlaps light up on their own. You see the electrician's trim-out sitting on top of the painter's finish coat in the same zone before either crew has been told to show up. - Megger the electrical runs and pressure-test the plumbing before cover. Finding a bad run after the drywall is up isn't a conflict, it's a demolition project.
- Overhead before finishes. Always. Grid, duct, and sprinkler heads get set and tested before flooring and paint go in, or you're paying twice.

- Get the affected foremen in the same conversation fast. Most conflicts die in a five-minute talk if you have it Tuesday instead of letting it fester to Friday.
- Decide the resequence and update the plan. The resolution isn't real until it's reflected in the next weekly work plan everyone's working from.
- Note what caused it. Space? Sequence? Bad info? That tag is what lets you prevent the next one.
Keeping that trail matters beyond the moment.
