Gutters are the trade everybody forgets until the first hard rain, and then suddenly they're everybody's problem. On paper it's a two-day scope on a small building. In practice, gutter installation sits at the crossroads of roofing, fascia, siding, painting, and site drainage, and it's the trade most likely to get squeezed into whatever window is left over. Where Gutters Actually Fall in the Sequence

Roofing has to be complete at the eave — not just the field. Drip edge, eave flashing, and the starter course all have to be done, because the back of the gutter tucks under the drip edge. If your roofers are still working a valley or a ridge cap, that's fine; gutters only care about the eave line. Learn to read roofing progress by eave, not by "the roof's done," and you'll open up gutter windows a few days earlier than the roofing foreman will admit to.
Fascia and soffit are the real gate. Gutters hang off the fascia, and hangers screwed into a fascia board that's about to be wrapped, painted, or replaced is rework guaranteed. On a job with prefinished aluminum fascia wrap, the wrap goes on first. On a paint-grade wood fascia, get at least the prime coat and ideally the first finish coat on before gutters, because nobody's cutting in behind a hung gutter cleanly. The Fascia-and-Paint Handoff Is Where Jobs Die
The single most common gutter failure I see isn't installation quality — it's sequencing against paint. A superintendent lets the gutter crew go the day fascia carpentry wraps up, painters come behind, and now they're cutting a brush line along the top edge of a hung gutter, dripping on the new gutter face, and charging you for the mess. First, the run gets fabricated to length on site, so you need the actual building available — not a plan dimension — before the crew mobilizes. Second, and this is the one that bites people: the seamless machine and the coil come as a unit. If you split a crew across two buildings on the same day thinking you're being efficient, you've now got one machine and one coil truck trying to serve two locations. Batch by building. Get one building fully ready — roof at the eave, fascia painted, access clear — and let the crew run it end to end before they move.
Keep an eye on coil color and profile lead time too. A 5-inch K-style in a stock color is off-the-shelf; a 6-inch, a half-round, or a custom color can run weeks. That's a procurement item that belongs in your look-ahead well before the install week, not a surprise the crew discovers at mobilization.
Multi-Building Jobs: Chase Readiness, Not the Plan
On a multi-family or townhome job with a dozen buildings, the gutter schedule is really a readiness problem. Buildings don't finish roofing and fascia in the order you drew them. The crew that wins is the one that redeploys to whatever building is actually ready this week, not the one the original bar chart said was next.

If the design calls for downspouts to daylight onto splash blocks, you're mostly free — but confirm final grade is close, because a downspout cut to a grade that later drops six inches leaves an ugly floating elbow. If the design calls for tie-ins to underground drainage — solid pipe, pop-up emitters, a storm system — now you're married to the site utility contractor. Those underground stubs have to be roughed in and located before you can terminate, and the connection has to be coordinated so the transition is clean and doesn't leak or clog.
The failure mode here is timing: gutters and downspouts go in, site work isn't ready, so downspouts get left long or capped "temporarily," and temporary becomes permanent until a punch walk catches it eight months later. Put the underground drainage completion in front of the downspout termination as a hard predecessor. If the stubs aren't in and located, downspouts don't get their final connection — full stop. Track that handoff deliberately so the site contractor's slippage shows up on your plan instead of in a callback.
Access and Weather: The Quiet Schedule Killers
Gutter work is all at the eave, which means every foot of it happens off a ladder or a lift. On a single-story house, ladders are fine. On three-story multi-family or anything with tall walls and tight setbacks, you need a lift, and lifts have to be coordinated — reserved, delivered, and not fighting other trades for the same machine and the same ground. A gutter crew standing around because siding has the boom lift all day is pure waste. Sort out access equipment in the same conversation where you set the install date.
Weather is a real but manageable constraint. Gutters don't need heat to cure like paint or sealant, so cold isn't a hard stop, but you don't want crews on wet ladders or roll-forming in a downpour, and sealant on end caps and miters wants dry, above-freezing conditions to set up right. Build a rain plan: know which sheltered or lower work the crew can pick up on a wet day so a bad forecast doesn't just burn a day. Watching the forecast against your install week and having that backup work identified is basic look-ahead hygiene — it's the difference between a lost day and a shuffled one.
Install Quality: The Things That Cause Callbacks
Most gutter callbacks trace to a handful of install details. Check these before the crew leaves, not at punch:
- Slope. Gutters need pitch toward the outlets — roughly a quarter inch of fall per ten feet is the rule of thumb, more on long runs. A dead-level gutter holds water, breeds mosquitoes, and stains the face. Long runs may need a high point in the middle draining to outlets at both ends.
- Hanger spacing. Hidden hangers on 24-inch centers is typical, tighter in snow country. Skimp on hangers and the gutter sags and pulls loose the first time it's full of ice or wet leaves.
- Outlet count and downspout sizing. Too few outlets or undersized downspouts and the gutter overflows in a real storm regardless of how well it's hung. This is a design-review item worth catching early.
- Miters and end caps. These are the leak points. Sealed clean, they last; rushed, they weep and stain the fascia below within a season.
- Downspout strapping. Straps at top, bottom, and mid-run so the leader doesn't rattle loose off the wall.
Document the slope, hanger, and outlet checks as you go. On a warranty claim two years out, a dated record that the run was verified is worth a lot more than everyone's memory.
Gutter Guards and Punch: Don't Bundle Them Wrong
If the job includes gutter guards or leaf screens, that's a separate pass after the gutters are hung and, ideally, after the surrounding trades are done throwing debris around. Install guards too early and you're pulling them back off to clean construction junk out of the trough. Sequence guards as a finish operation near the tail of the building, not stapled to the gutter install.
For punch, the reality is a gutter crew will have a short list per building — a re-slope here, a resealed miter there, a downspout the landscapers bent.
