Ask any foreman who came up before smartphones what "field software" meant, and you'll get a laugh. It meant a rite-in-the-rain notebook, a golf pencil behind the ear, and a truck cab full of rolled-up drawings that were three revisions out of date by Thursday. The tools have changed. The job hasn't. You still have to know exactly what got built today, who built it, what got in the way, and what's supposed to happen tomorrow — and you have to be able to prove all of it six months later when the argument starts.

The daily log: write it like you'll read it in court
Your daily log is the single most valuable record you produce, and most foremen treat it like a chore. Don't. When a delay claim or a backcharge lands eight months from now, the daily log is the document that either saves you or sinks you. The difference is specificity.
"Poured slab. Good day." is worthless. "Poured 4,200 SF of slab-on-grade, grids 4–7, 6 in the finish crew from 6:30 to 2:15, pump truck arrived 45 min late (Metro), sawcut joints same day at 4 in curl" is a record. Get in the habit of logging manpower by trade and headcount, the specific area or grid you worked, deliveries received, equipment on site, and — this is the one people skip — the things that slowed you down. A missing detail, a stacked trade, an RFI you're waiting on. Those notes are the breadcrumbs that let a scheduler or PM connect a lost day to a cause.
