Walk any jobsite at 6:45 in the morning and you'll see the same thing: a cluster of guys standing around the gang box with their hands in their pockets, waiting to be told where to go. The foreman is on the phone with the super trying to figure out if the deck got poured over the weekend. Two subs just showed up expecting to work the same corridor. Somebody's forklift is boxed in. Nobody's swung a hammer yet, and the clock's been running for fifteen minutes.
That first hour is the most expensive hour of the day, and it's the one we manage the worst. If you've got thirty tradespeople on the deck and you burn twenty minutes of everyone's time sorting out the plan, you've just spent ten labor-hours on confusion before a single task moves. Do that every morning for a month and it adds up to real money and real schedule slip. The whole point of putting a schedule in a foreman's hand on his phone is to make that first hour disappear — to have everyone working with purpose by the time coffee's cold.

The real question isn't "what's the schedule" — it's "what do I do right now"
A foreman doesn't need to see the whole Gantt chart at 6:30 a.m. He needs today, filtered down to his crews and his areas, on one screen, without swiping through four weeks of bars to find it. The gap between a full CPM schedule and what a foreman can use in the field is exactly where morning confusion lives.
This is the difference between a master schedule and a genuine short-interval plan. The master schedule tells you the drywall hangers are on floor three this week. The daily view tells this specific foreman that his three-man crew is hanging the north corridor, rooms 312 through 328, starting at the elevator lobby, and that the framing inspection on those rooms already cleared Friday afternoon. One is a promise; the other is a work order. Is the work actually ready? Constraints before crews

The crew stands around, you scramble for backfill work, and you've lost the momentum you needed to hit the day's numbers.
This is the heart of look-ahead scheduling and the Last Planner mindset: you don't put a task in the weekly work plan until it's clean of constraints. In the field, that means the app should tell a foreman not just what's scheduled but whether it's actually ready — predecessors complete, inspections signed off, prerequisites cleared. A simple ready-versus-blocked indicator on each task does more to prevent a bad start than any amount of narrative.
A few things worth checking every single morning, because they're the usual suspects for a dead start:
- Predecessor complete and inspected. "Framing's done" and "framing passed inspection" are two different states. Don't close a wall on the first one.
- Area released by the trade ahead of you. If the MEP rough-in isn't buttoned up, your insulation crew is going to be stepping over pipefitters all day.
- Material staged, not just delivered. A pallet at the loading dock four floors down is not the same as material at the work face.
- Equipment freed up. The lift, the pump, the crane pick window — if two foremen planned the same shared resource, one of you is waiting.
Run that mental checklist in ten seconds off a phone and you'll catch the dead task before you send anyone to it.
Priorities and the critical path, made obvious
Not everything on today's list carries the same weight. Some tasks are on the critical path and every hour of delay pushes the whole job. Some are float work you could slide a day without anyone noticing. A foreman who can't tell the difference tends to chase whatever's easiest or closest, and the critical work drifts.
The daily view should make the must-finish work visually distinct from the nice-to-finish work. When a super sets priorities in the weekly plan, those priorities need to ride all the way down to the foreman's screen — otherwise they only lived in the super's head and the planning meeting, and by morning they're gone. Carry the safety brief and the day's constraints in the same place

It's a lot cleaner when the activity-specific hazards, the hot-work permit requirements, and any confined-space or overhead-work notes are attached to the actual tasks the crew is running that day, rather than pulled from a generic binder. If today's work includes a floor penetration or working near an energized panel, that should surface next to the task, not live in a document nobody opens.
Same goes for the messages from management. The one-line note from the super — "owner's walking the third floor at 2, keep it clean" — needs to land on the foreman's phone in the morning, not get relayed through three people and arrive garbled at lunch. Yesterday's carryover is today's first problem
Almost nothing finishes exactly as planned. There's always the last two rooms, the punch, the thing that got 80% done before the crew got pulled. If that carryover isn't tracked, it quietly disappears — and then three weeks later somebody discovers the corridor never actually got closed out and now it's holding up finishes.
A good field workflow starts the morning by reconciling yesterday: what got committed, what actually completed, what's rolling over. That's not just bookkeeping. Tracking your Percent Plan Complete — how much of what you promised you actually delivered — is the single best early warning that a crew is over-committed or that some constraint keeps biting you.
