A concrete pour is one of the few things on a jobsite you can't take back. Once that mud is in the forms and setting, your options collapse fast. Miss a blockout, forget a sleeve, leave a dowel out of the mat, and you're either coring, chipping, or drilling and epoxying for the next two weeks explaining to the engineer why. Everybody on the crew knows the feeling of standing on a slab the morning after, coffee in hand, spotting the conduit stub that should have been six inches to the left. That's what makes pour day different from almost everything else you schedule. It's not "we'll fix it Monday." It's permanent.
So the question isn't really whether software can pour concrete for you — obviously it can't. The question is whether the coordination in the days before the truck shows up happens on purpose or by luck. Good scheduling and field-management tools don't replace a superintendent's judgment; they take the twenty moving parts that live in your head and your text messages and put them somewhere the whole team can see them. The pour is downstream of a dozen other trades
The biggest mistake young supers make is treating the pour as the event. The pour isn't the event. The pour is the finish line of a race that a half-dozen trades have been running for a week. Formwork has to be set, braced, and checked for line and grade. Rebar has to be tied, chaired, and lapped per the drawings, with the inspector's tag on it. Electrical and plumbing rough-ins, sleeves, and blockouts have to be in and secured so they don't float. Waterproofing or vapor barrier under a slab-on-grade has to be down and lapped. Embeds, anchor bolts, and weld plates have to be set to a template and surveyed.

When you lay out a three-to-four-week look-ahead and hang the pour date on the wall, every one of those predecessor activities lines up in front of it with an owner and a finish date. You stop asking "are we ready?" the day before and start asking it a week out, when there's still time to do something about the answer. Better to know Tuesday.
Build a real pre-pour checklist and make it a gate
Verbal readiness is worthless. "Yeah, we're good" is not a status. Every pour should have a written pre-pour checklist that functions as a hard gate — nobody orders the concrete until it's clean. A workable slab or deck checklist looks something like this:
- Formwork set, braced, and shot for grade; edge forms tight, no gaps that'll leak paste
- Rebar placed, tied, lapped, and chaired; clearances and cover verified against the drawings
- All sleeves, blockouts, and embeds in and secured against floating; anchor bolt templates checked
- MEP rough-in inspected and signed; conduit stub-ups located and protected
- Vapor barrier / waterproofing down and lapped (slab-on-grade)
- Reinforcing inspection scheduled and passed — inspector's release in hand
- Forms clean, blown out, and wetted or oiled as required; no debris, no standing water, no ice
- Access for the pump and trucks confirmed; washout location set and lined
- Mix design approved and matches what you ordered; slump, air, and any admixtures confirmed
- Crew size right for the pour rate; vibrators, floats, screeds, and enough hands to finish
Photograph the deck before the pour. Not because anyone likes paperwork, but because the day a slab cracks or a sleeve ends up in the wrong bay, the only thing that saves you is the picture that shows the deck was right when you signed off. Pour day is a logistics problem, and time is the enemy
Once the deck is clean, the pour itself is a choreography of arrivals. Concrete has a clock on it from the moment water hits cement — typically you want it placed and consolidated inside about 90 minutes in normal conditions, less in the heat. - Truck spacing. Order loads on a realistic interval matched to how fast you can actually place — not how fast the plant wants to send them. Too tight and trucks stack up and go stale; too loose and the pump starves and you get cold joints between lifts.
- Pump and access. Confirm the pump the day before, and confirm again that morning. A no-show pump on a deck pour is a canceled day. Walk the truck route so nobody discovers the low-clearance canopy with a loaded mixer.
- Crew and finishers. Placing is not finishing. Make sure you've got enough hands to keep up with the pump and enough trowels to close the surface on time, especially on a flatwork pour where the finish window won't wait for you.
- Washout and cleanup. A lined washout set before the first truck, not scrambled for after.
None of that is glamorous, and all of it is where days go sideways. Getting the pump truck, the finishers, and the inspection tech onto the same weekly plan — and notifying the affected subs when the date moves — is precisely the grunt work coordination software is good at. Concrete has opinions about temperature. In cold weather, below about 40°F you're into cold-weather protection — heated enclosures, blankets, accelerators, and no pour onto frozen ground, ever. Rain on fresh flatwork before it's set can ruin the surface. A pour scheduled into a bad forecast is a decision to gamble.
The practical move is to watch the forecast against your pour dates a few days out and build in the option to slide. That's easier said than done when the truck rotation is already booked, which is exactly why the call should come as early as possible. Look-ahead scheduling doesn't predict weather, but when your pours are laid out on a visible plan, it's obvious which ones fall in a risky window and which have flexibility to move a day — and it gives you a place to line up the backup work so the crew isn't standing around if you scrub.
Documentation is the part everybody skips and everybody regrets
Grab the batch tickets. Every load, every time. The ticket tells you the mix, the water added on site, the time batched, and the admixtures — and it's your first line of defense if the cylinders come back low. Note the water anyone adds at the chute, because that's where strength quietly walks out the door. Make your testing tech take cylinders on the right frequency, log the slump and air, and record which portion of the pour each set represents so a bad break can be traced to a location, not the whole slab.
Keep the placement record too: start and stop times, lift sequence, where the cold joints landed, who was on the crew, what the weather did. It feels like busywork right up until there's a crack, a dispute, or a low break, and then it's the only thing standing between you and eating a repair that wasn't your fault. Capturing all of this in the field — photos, tickets, times, tied to the specific pour — is where mobile field tools genuinely pull their weight. The pour isn't done when the trucks leave
Placement is the middle of the story, not the end. Curing is where a lot of otherwise good concrete gets ruined by neglect. Wet cure or cure compound has to go on promptly and stay on — a slab that dries out in the first days loses strength and crazes on the surface, and no amount of paperwork fixes that. Protect it. And protect the schedule that follows it.
Strength gain drives what happens next, and it's on its own timeline regardless of how badly you want the forms. General rules of thumb from the field:
- Don't strip vertical forms until the concrete can hold its shape — often 12 to 24 hours for walls and columns in normal conditions, but always per spec and mix.
- Shoring and reshoring on elevated decks stays until the slab has the strength to carry itself and any load above — this is engineer's territory, not a gut call.
- Post-tensioning gets stressed only after the concrete hits the specified strength, usually confirmed by field-cure cylinders, not the standard 28-day set.
- Don't load a green slab. Staging pallets of block or drywall on concrete that hasn't gained strength is how you crack a deck you poured perfectly.
This is the sneaky place a look-ahead pays off after the fact: those cure and strength-gain periods aren't dead time on the plan, they're constraints.
